Reviews: War Horse Returns to London!
Find out what the critics had to say about War Horse...
War Horse has returned to London and taken over The National Theatre! It's no surprise that the critics have largely agreed that this iconic theatrical phenomenon has lots none of its emotional power.
Originally adapted by Nick Stafford from Michael Morpurgo's timeless novel, War Horse has become one of British theatre's greatest success stories since its premiere in 2007. This latest revival has prompted a wave of praise for its ground-breaking puppetry, visual storytelling and pivotal anti-war message.
The Guardian described the production as "still one of British theatre's most phenomenal creations", praising the show's impact and arguing that its themes feel especially relevant in today's world.
The Times was equally enthusiastic, calling the revival "impossible not to be swept away by". They also shone a spotlight on the puppet company, stating the Joey remains "more horse than a real horse".
"Bring tissues. You'll think you're above it. You are not"
WhatsOnStage also highlighted the emotional power that War Horse brings, "Bring tissues. You'll think you're above it. You are not". There's not one area of War Horse that isn't recognised; cast, set, puppetry and the way all talents combined creates a story that feels real. "It earns its tears honestly, which is rare than it sounds; grown adults leaving looking like they've taken a part-time job in chopping onions."
Praise for War Horse is hardly new, but always a pleasure to see.
