Nothing but the truth with these glowing reviews!

The Apollo Theatre welcomes the return of Oscar-winning writer Florian Zeller's Olivier-nominated comedy hit The Truth, a limited 14-week season of one of his most acclaimed works. With an all-star cast, led by Tony Award-nominated Stephen Mangan, alongside Ardal O'Hanlon (Father Ted, My Hero), Sarah Hadland (Miranda, The Job Lot) and double Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee, the story follows Michel, a morally conflicted businessman juggling an affair with Alice, a doctor who is also married.

Nothing - and no one - is quite what it seems. But what did the critics think?

The Truth London Critic Reviews

"In 2017, Posner directed Zeller's (unfaithful) companion piece, the darker and less farcical The Lie, in which a foursome with the same names and relationships trade falsehoods and the dramatist doubles down on the proposition that factlessness is tactfulness: "Whatever they claim, people don't really want to be told the truth." Let's hope the same cast in the sequel lies ahead but, for the moment, The Truth is joyous summer fun. Honestly." - The Guardian

"But there's no denying that The Truth has been polished to a glistening sheen. I'd advise audiences to go along for the gorgeously acted ride and save until later any nagging questions that may arise." London Theatre

"Starring Stephen Mangan as Michel, Ardal O'Hanlon as Paul, Sarah Hadland as Alice and Janie Dee as Laurence, this cast of incredibly well-known actors from stage and screen had a lot to live up to, and it absolutely delivered.

"Set in Paris, Florian Zeller's acclaimed play has been translated by Christopher Hampton, ensuring none of the jokes or subtle digs have been lost. At 90 minutes with no interval, and with fantastic direction from Lindsay Posner, it's a brilliant example of a funny and engaging play that doesn't need any additional storylines." - Theatre and Tonic

"Stephen Mangan brings buckets of sitcom charm. Florian Zeller's polished piece of machinery resembles an old-fashioned English sex farce, until the casual falsehoods unravel." - The Times

"Stephen Mangan is terrific fun as a monstrous adulterer. The Truth, Florian Zeller's slippery comedy of lies and infidelity, returns with a hugely entertaining revival." - The Telegraph

"This clever, elusive comedy touches on profound questions about the meaning and malleability of truth. It is a subject, as one character observes, that has perplexed philosophers for thousands of years - though few of them had this much fun." - Financial Times

"What starts as a seemingly innocent and, dare I say, by-the-numbers play soon reveals itself to be as deceptive as the characters in The Truth, resulting in a rollercoaster that will have you laughing and putting your head in your hands through second-hand embarrassment in equal measure. Fantastic writing and direction make this an enjoyable watch in any production, but it is the gathering of this exceptional cast of four that takes The Truth to the next level, particularly that of Stephen Mangan's wildly over-the-top and scene-stealing turn as Michele, literally stealing every scene he is in, which is all of them. A trip to the Apollo Theatre this summer may just be the perfect tonic to escape from the dishonesty that lurks outside. This production is easily a hit, and that's the truth!"- All That Dazzles

"What makes The Truth so enjoyable is that nobody emerges looking particularly virtuous. Every conversation becomes a negotiation, every confession feels suspicious, and every declaration of honesty carries its own hidden agenda. The play continually shifts the audience's perspective, encouraging us to reassess what we think we know about each character before gleefully pulling the rug out from under us once again." - London Theatre Direct
