A very entertaining Mr. Sloane
Jordan Stephens is a very endearing and entertaining Mr. Sloane. He achieves an excellent balance of ‘cockiness’ and humility and delivers a very engaging and compelling standout performance. Tamzin Outhwaite is believable, vulnerable, witty, natural and relatable. Daniel Cerqueira is appropriately understated yet arrogant, humorous and convincing. Christopher Fairbank has the audience in his palm right from the start as an eccentric and loveable ‘dadda’. This quartet is harmonious and delivers flawlessly against the backdrop of wonderfully chaotic, eclectic yet simple staging and production that enable the audience to become intimate with the characters. An excellent performance - firmly rooted in the sixties, enhanced by a bit of rizzle and kick from Jordan Stephens. A must see!
Entertaining?
The trouble with this play is that it is dated and simply goes on for too long. The sexual mores that drove it has passed into history and therefore it now goes on at unnecessary length in the second half. There were commendable performances from the cast. The set, however, is unimaginative and a gimmick use of strobe lighting simply pointless. I am pleased that I went to see the play because I had not seen it before and because of its historical reputation. Would I want to see it again? No.
