Gripping gothic psychological thriller it most definitely is not!

I saw this on its opening night. Maybe it didn't help that it was clearly underrehearsed and so was a bit ragged but this was a truly awful play. The themes of the play were only explored in the most facile and banal ways without any depth. It was definitely not a thriller, nor was any psyhcology seemingly deployed by any of the characters who displayed little inner workings and if gothic is just depicting a country house with a few creaks and groans then my shed could do better. I expected so much from Winsome Pinnock who is highly regarded. This felt thrown together rather than written. Maybe she was struggling for ideas and fell back on worn out tropes that had nothing new to say about black history, the complexity of our colonial heritage and those that did the worst possible things to enslaved people. I would have enjoyed this as a Radio 4 play but that is its level, not for a stage and a live audience.
