Antony Sher takes on Shakespeare's most iconic King as plays the part of King Lear - Shakespeare's infamous 'mad king' who tests his three daughters' love for him, giving away portions of his kingdom as a prize, but learns to his detriment that flattery is not the same as loyalty or devotion. Direction comes from RSC Artistic director Gregory Doran.
WHAT IS KING LEAR ABOUT?
The ageing monarch of Britain, King Lear, decides to handover his duties to his three daughters by dividing up his kingdom amongst them. In order to do this, he decides to allocate the portions based upon each of his daughter's declarations of their love for him. However his youngest and favourite daughter, Cordelia, is upset by this barbaric method and remains silent. Outraged at her refusal to participate, King Lear immediately banishes her, leaving his other two daughters to inherit his fortune - an action that ultimately leads to his downfall.
