Mark Ravenhill Debuts Bold New Work

English playwright Mark Ravenhill didn't so much emerge in the 90s as explode onto the UK theater scene with a career-defining debut that went on to become one of the decisive cultural events of the decade. Twenty two years after the trailblazing Shopping and F---ing, Ravenhill debuts his brand new work for the Royal Court Theatre, exploring identity, gender and the failure of modern liberalism with his trademark black humour and incisive wit.

Turning from consumer culture, Ravenhill centres the abuse of power its consequences in The Cane. After a 45 year career forming young minds, school master Edward should be preparing for a loving, celebratory send-off. But instead, he's been holed up in his house with his wife for six days while an angry mob of his students rages outside...

Royal Court Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone directs.
