Harriet Walter returns in Phyllida Lloyd's triumph

The Donmar Warehouse does Shakespeare again! This time the action takes place at London's newly built Kings' Cross Theatre as part of the current trilogy of plays in rep for the autumn/winter season. Harriet Walter, recently seen in Netflix's hit show The Crown, returns to her critically acclaimed role of Brutus, leading Phyllida Lloyd's all-women Julius Caesar. Lloyd's inspired input puts a fascinating spin on the play, featuring an all-female cast who play inmates in a prison, who themselves are staging a production of Julius Caesar. A brutal, powerful tale, which explores the urge to overthrow authority, a timely play for our own turbulent political era.

Well received when it premiered in 2013, critics were bowled over by the cast's dazzling performances who choose not to overplay the masculinity of the traditionally male roles. They have instead each chosen to dig far deeper into each role, and the result is a unique, compelling reworking of this classic play- within a play.

As one of Britain's most esteemed female director/playwrights, Lloyd is no stranger to working with the Donmar Warehouse on productions including Henry IV, Julius Caesar, Boston Marriage, The Threepenny Opera and Mary Stuart. She has also found success in Hollywood with hit films starring Meryl Streep including with The Iron Lady and Mamma Mia.
