Having been a supporting part since 1843, this brand new play, written and directed by Alexander Knott wonders what would happen if the eponymous Bob Crachit, beleaguered clerk of Mr Scrooge, stepped centre stage, enduring one of old Ebeneezer's ghostly visitations for himself.
What follows is a thrilling twist on Dicken's classic Christmas yarn, launching Crachit into the throes of Christmas Yet To Come, a place where joy is hard to come by. A boundary-pushing re-imagining, Crachit might just be the most enjoyable take on A Christmas Carol since The Muppets had their turn in 1992.
Olivier winner John Dalgliesh is our hero, a role he played back in 2017 in the Old Vic's A Christmas Carol. Now the main attraction, he's joined by Freya Sharp as Mrs Crachit. Knott is enthused at this new staging and his stars, saying: "John and Freya are superb, versatile performers and we are all looking forward to bringing this haunting, modern and ultimately uplifting winter's ghost story to Park Theatre".
