The Trial of Jane Fonda

The Trial of Jane Fonda at Park Theatre

Why see The Trial of Jane Fonda?

The rehabilitation of Hanoi Jane

West End musical star Alex Gaumond takes on his first lead non-singing role in a drama that follows the fallout of Jane Fonda's infamous Vietnam War photograph. A popular actress at the time of the war in 1972, she was a pinup icon whose posters appear on the insides of tanks and tents. However, her staunchly anti-war views landed her in hot water both abroad and at home, long after the conflict ended.

Denounced as a traitor following the publication of a triumphant Fonda sitting on a Vietcong anti-aircraft gun, the incident very nearly ended her career as a top-billing actress well into the Eighties. The story takes place in 1988 where Fonda meets a group of angry Vietnam veterans, who have halted the filming of her new movie opposite Robert De Niro. As Jane tries to reason with the angry men, she faces an uphill struggle to reassure them of her patriotism and to prevent the actions of her past ending her career in the movie industry. Terry Jastrow's powerful historical play imagines the goings-on of that fateful meeting, with Academy Award nominee Anne Archer playing the legendary Fonda.
