Bend it Like Beckham

Why see Bend it Like Beckham?

Nominated for five olivier awards!

Following hot on the heels of Made in Dagenham, Billy Elliot and Kinky Boots, British hit comedy films are getting a new lease of life through musical theatre. The latest project in this canon is Bend it Like Beckham, the 2002 romantic comedy that starred Parminder Nagra (ER), and Kiera Knightley in her first major film role.

This might be your last chance to catch this quirky comedy on the West End though - its set to close on March 5th! Add to that its five Olivier nominations - including the coveted Best New Musical award - and you'd better act quick if you want a seat!

WHAT IS bend it like beckham ABOUT?

Jess (Natalie Dew) is a teenage Sikh girl growing up in a traditional family in London. Whilst her parents plan her life for university, work and marriage, Jess is meanwhile occupied with something more fun; namely the beautiful game, and a certain celebrity footballer. Whilst on a kickabout in her local neighbourhood, she is invited to play for a local all-female team by Jules (Lauren Samuels), a well-heeled English girl. Whilst her parents have strictly forbidden her from playing, Jess continues to sneak out for practice, until the day comes where her team are invited to play in Germany. Unfortunately for Jess, it also coincides with her older sister's wedding.... add to the mix a handsome local boy, Joe (Jamie Muscato), stolen kisses and cultural misunderstandings, Jess' world is turned upside down!

The musical is set to have a strong British-Bhangra influence, featuring bhangra star Kuljit Bharma, with British musicians playing Indian instruments, as well as scripting a mixture of English and Punjabi slang known as "Hing-lish" throughout.
