Comedian and actor Andy Sandberg adds a few more strings to his bow as this new play, penned and directed by the SNL and Lonely Island star, enjoys its world premiere this autumn at Riverside Studios. The first of five plays directed by Sandberg at the venue this season, Affluenza is based on true events and is a razor-sharp exploration of power, privilege and generational wealth, as evidenced by one of the most reviled American legal defences of recent times.
After the scion of a rich family causes a tragic car crash in The Hamptons, the summer playground of the ultra-wealthy, his very expensive lawyers mount an outrageous legal defence: claiming he was simply too affluent to know the difference between right and wrong, namely, he's got a bad case of 'Affluenza'. Shocking and darkly comic, Affluenza is a thoughtful look at accountability, family legacy, and the efficacy of the American justice system versus a vast multi-generational fortune.
