US Playwright Julia Jarcho's Acclaimed Crime Drama
The Royal Court Theatre marks an exciting new 2017-18 season with a programme of groundbreaking international works. Featuring plays by women playwrights from Syria to the US, the winter season gives an insight into the human lives behind conflict and empty statistics. Don't miss Grimly Handsome, the critically acclaimed 2013 Obie Award Winner by experimental theatre director and writer Julia Jarcho.
In an unnamed East Coast city during the Yuletide season, two Christmas-sellers enact a dark ritual, two policeman race against the clock to catch a serial killer on a spree and one woman's extra-marital affair entwines her into the case. This darkly funny and poetic tale is at surface level a crime-drama, yet throughout the course of the play its many layers blur the lines between human and animal, yielding an exploration of identity i.e. the violent, animalistic side of humanity.
