Why see Marie & Rosetta?

Mississippi, 1946

Starring Olivier Award-winning West End star Beverly Knight in the titular role!

Destined to bridge the divide between church and stage, the godmother of rock n' roll, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was named the sixth-greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone for her ability to shake the floors of nightclubs and the souls of holy traditionalists with her electric and wholly original rhythm and blues sound. Only she could take something as definitive as gospel and use it to influence the likes of Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, and Johnny Cash, kicking off the rock and roll genre during the 1950s. Now, this is your chance to see the story of the woman who shaped it all with nothing but an electric guitar and a whole lot of soul!

What's The Story?

Rosetta hits the road through the segregated Deep South with her newest recruit - the angel-voiced Marie Knight. But before Marie can join the ride, Rosetta needs to coax that sweet, Sunday-morning sound into something a little sassier, with just enough groove to raise the rafters. What unfolds is an unprecedented partnership, one that changed the face of music forever and inspired generations of artists. Expect a catalogue of hits that still bring much foot-stomping today - including Didn't It Rain and Peace in the Valley.
