The Merry Widow
A fresh interpretation of Lehar's favourite of the repertoire
A fresh interpretation of Lehar's favourite of the repertoire
Franz Lehar's bouncy comic opera returns in a brand new production that will have you smiling once again as the wealthy widow Hanna Gladwari pursues the love of the only man in Pontevedro not after her for her fortune.
The heir to 20 million francs, Hanna tries to resist the attempts of Baron Zeta, the Grand Duchy, to force her into marriage with a potential suitor, therefore keeping her newly gained money in the economy. After a series of lavish parties and balls he settles on Danilo, a fine citizen. But Danilo and Hanna have a history: he won't marry her for her money and she won't budge until she hears the ever important 'I love You'. Full of marvellous melodies and fizzing songs including 'Vilja Song', 'Merry Widow Waltz' and 'You'll find me a Maxims', The Merry Widow is a delicious confection that will leave all opera-goers, be they first-timers or veterans, with a sweet taste in their mouths!
