A groundbreaking new work from a new voice in British theatre!
Dynamic young theatremaker Lekan Lawal presents the hotly anticipated premiere of SUPERBLACKMAN as part of the Battersea Arts Center's Up Next initiative, a program that nurtures the talents of six new voices in London's theatre scene, and its Phoenix Season - the reopening of the center's Grand Hall three years after it was destroyed in a fire.
In line with his aspirations to create engaging theatre works that resonate socially and politically, Lawal weaves together themes of mental health and black representation with elements of mythology, pop culture and the graphic novel format for a visceral multi-sensory experience that will touch hearts and provoke thoughts. The story follows Al, a black youngster who learns he has the ability to fly and sets about crafting the perfect way to announce the news to his friends and family.
Performance date: 16 November 2018
