Why see The Full Monty?
THE HIT BRITISH FILM ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE!
Move over, Magic Mike. In 1997, a British film set in Sheffield took the world by storm with a hilarious and heartbreaking story of life on the dole, and how a group of men fought to better themselves in life, by taking a very unorthodox path. Seventeen years later, Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, The Hunger Games:Catching Fire) helmed this rip-roaring stage adaptation!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Setting the scene in post-industrial Sheffield, this the story is a microscosm in a city on the brink of collapse from unemployment and destitution. Six men, four of them former steel workers, are desperate to avoid poverty. In a last-ditch attempt to avoid the dole queue and to help one of their comrades be reunited with his son, the men group together to make money in the most unlikliest of ways - to become a troupe of male strippers!
The Full Monty features the much-loved tunes of Donna Summer, Tom Jones and Hot Chocolate that appeared in the original film, and returns the heart of the story to Sheffield, where it all began.
The play, not to be confused with the sentimental American musical version, premiered in Sheffield where Beaufoy was determined to bring the heart of the story back to, and embarked on a nationwide tour before transferring for a short-lived run at the Noel Coward Theatre in Feb/March of 2014. Whilst ritics were favourable about the play, evening garnering an Olivier nomination for Best New Comedy, the play was closed early, due to poor ticketing sales, causing surprise throughout critic circles.
