Why See Groundhog Day?
TIM MINCHIN'S NEW MUSICAL IS GREENLIT!
Australian comic and songwriter Tim Minchin teams up once again with director Matthew Warchus for the highly anticipated stage adaptation of Groundhog Day. Based on Harold Ramis' hit 1993 movie that starred his Ghostbuster co-star Bill Murray, the musical saw its first workshop take place in July 2014, and will have a limited ten week run at the Old Vic Theatre, before a possible transfer to London's West End.
WHAT IS GROUNDHOG DAY ABOUT?
We follow a misanthropic TV news reporter who is tasked with covering the biggest story in the smallest town in Pennsylvania; the emergence of the local groundhog, Punxatawney Phil, who's appearance will herald the end of winter. Accompanied by his beautiful and long-suffering producer and a jaded cameraman, this just seems to be a day to get over and done with, as soon as possible.
However, the fates seem to have a different idea in store for the reporter, as he is forced to relive the same day over and over (and over) again, until he learns an important lesson about life and love. But how many times will he be reliving this same day until he changes his cynical outlook on life?
The musical reunites many of the creative team behind Minchin's phenomenal hit Matilda, which has been running in the West End since 2011 and transferred to Broadway in 2013 winning a plethora of both Olivier and Tony Awards in the process. Matthew Warchus is set to direct, as he is lined up to become the new creative director of the Old Vic following Kevin Spacey's 11-year tenure.
