The Globe's winter season 2023/24 starts strong as Henrik Ibsen's shocking play storms into the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from November 10th. The first Ibsen work to grace the candlelit stage, Ghosts is one of his most divisive. A scathing commentary on morality, its themes of incest, STDs, and euthanasia caused controversy on its 19th-century premiere, yet has since become regarded as one of his finest (if rarely produced) masterworks.

This stunning act of storytelling delves deep into the vicarious joy we get from others' suffering as the butt of the joke steps centre stage. Created by Tim Crouch, I, Malvolio flips the script on Twelfth Night, showing us the much-abused steward's side of the story. Frequently hilarious and somewhat dark, Malvolio proves he's much more than a yellow-stockinged punchline in a tour-de-force one-man performance.

Shakespeare's iconic tale of racism, jealousy, and betrayal returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for the 2023/34 winter season. Directed by Ola Ince following her success with 2021's Romeo and Juliet, trace a man's downfall into jealous insanity, thanks to his own paranoia, the machinations of his devious right-hand man, Iago and the noxious impact of racism. A story that resonates deeply to this day, Ince will explore the nature of black success and the forces that seek to keep it down.

Familial ties are tested to the limit as John Webster's scathing revenge tragedy returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse a decade after it first opened the venue. First staged around 1612, Webster sets a scene of bitterness and misogyny as two brothers plot to block their widowed sister from moving on with the new husband of her choice.
