I, Malvolio

I, Malvolio at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

Why see I, Malvolio?

He'll be revenged on the whole pack of you

This stunning act of storytelling delves deep into the vicarious joy we get from others' suffering as the butt of the joke steps centre stage. Created by Tim Crouch, I, Malvolio flips the script on Twelfth Night, showing us the much-abused steward's side of the story. Frequently hilarious and somewhat dark, Malvolio proves he's much more than a yellow-stockinged punchline in a tour-de-force one-man performance.

Who?

Pompous and puritanical, Malvolio appears in Twelfth Night as Olivia's steward. His strict outlook and fierce loyalty are often mocked by Oliver's errant uncle Sir Toby Belch and his cronies. He is humiliated entirely when he believes a missive from Belch is from his beloved mistress, leading him to appear before her in yellow stockings making loud proclamations of love. Even though he swears revenge, he ends the play with his reputation and dignity in tatters.
