The Guardian Children's Fiction Prize-winning children's classic Goodnight Mr Tom comes to London's Southwark Playhouse for a limited one-month run this Summer. Written by English author Michelle Magorian in 1981, the beloved story is brought to the stage by champion of children's theatre David Wood in a rousing adaptation that proves ages is no match for the power of love and friendship.
The uplifting story is set during the tension-filled months just before World War II broke out. William Beech, a young boy who is emotionally and physically abused by his mother, is evacuated from Deptford to the English countryside to live with his new guardian Tom Oakely. Reclusive and bad-tempered, Tom is marred by his own tragedy, but is touched by Will's presence in his home, warming to him and taking him under his wing. Their bond is threatened when Will's domineering mother sends for her son.
