Take Us To Heaven!
The gloriously joyous Sister Act returns to take us to heaven once again as it comes back to London in 2020. Stage darling Brenda Edwards will take on sassy songstress Deloris Van Cartier, in this slightly reworked 2020 revival. Based on the Golden Globe-nominated movie of the same name, Sister Act follows club singer Deloris as she takes refuge in a local convent and embarks of bringing the power of music to the local parish!
Producer Whoopie Goldberg (yes Whoopie is involved!) has teamed up with musical theatre staple Alan Menken to revive our favourite roof-raising hits "Take Me To Heaven", "Fabulous, Baby!" and "Raise Your Voice". So don your habits and start warming up those vocal cords for the return of this funky fabulous musical!
After reaching the semi-finals of X Factor in 2005 Brenda Edwards has taken the theatrical world by storm and has appeared in productions of Hairspray, Carousel, Moby Dick, We Will Rock You and Chicago! Edwards is also a regular presenter on ITV long-runner Loose Women.
Did you know?
Brenda Edwards auditioned for the part of the Deloris when the musical first debuted in London but wasn't given the part because she was considered "too old" (boo!). But! Edwards obviously stuck in the producer's minds as Whoopi Goldberg and Jamie Wilson have reworked the role in order to accommodate Edwards. On the change, Goldberg said "Previous versions have had Deloris as a 23-year-old - but there are different stakes when you're older. You can be much more irreverent when you're older than you can be when you're in your twenties and thirties. Time makes you funnier!"
What is Sister Act about?
When Disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir Deloris breaths new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood.
