The Incredible WWI Production Will Visit 7 UK Cities This Year


This autumn, audiences across the nation will have the opportunity to experience the acclaimed production of War Horse as it embarks on a nationwide UK tour. Adapted from Michael Morpurgo's gripping tale by Marianne Elliott, Tom Morris, and Nick Stafford, the play follows the journey of a horse across the Western Front, offering a poignant depiction of the horrors witnessed in the trenches of World War I.

Morris expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to revisit War Horse, emphasizing the enduring power of Morpurgo's narrative in today's context. He highlighted the origin of the production as a groundbreaking experiment developed through workshops at the National Theatre Studio. Morris reflected on the thrill of reuniting with the original creative team to bring Joey, the beloved horse character, back to the stage.

The tour will commence on September 5th at the New Wimbledon Theatre, followed by performances at the Lowry in Salford starting September 18th, the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from October 8th, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from October 22nd, the Sunderland Empire from November 5th, the Theatre Royal Plymouth from November 26th, and the New Theatre Oxford from December 10th, extending into the festive season. 


What is the story of War Horse?

"War Horse" is a play based on the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo, adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford. It first played at the National Theatre in 2007 and gained mass attention. It tells the story of a young boy named Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, set against the backdrop of World War I. The play gained notoriety for its incredible puppetry and sound design.
