Jeezus!
Award winning queer musical in London
Award winning queer musical in London
After a run at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe which saw the production pick up the Edinburgh Untapped Award, the new musical Jeezus! returns to London this spring! A musical comedy born from writer Sergio Antonio Maggiolo's personal experience of growing up queer in a hardline Catholic environment in Peru, the musical also stars Maggiolo in the lead role as an altar boy named Jesus. With Laura Killeen directing and music performed live by Tom Cagnoni, this hilarious but personal story features a soundtrack inspired by Latin pop and regional South American musical styles.
In 1990s Peru, army general Jose and his wife Maria have a son named Jesus, who has become an altar boy. As Jesus gears up to take his very first communion, he surprisingly finds himself developing some intense feelings towards his scantily-clad namesake sprawled out on the cross. These feelings begin to take on a life of their own, setting up a story which flits between joyfully naughty and soberingly reflective, with playful themes of sexuality juxtaposed with the heavy reality of societal and institutional homophobia.
