Your 2025 Theatre Rewind!
Looking back at 2025 and the big moments that happened in theater.
As 2025 draws to a close, we thought it was the perfect time to reflect on this year in theater. From bold revivals to box-office breaking debuts, along with viral stage moments that took social media by storm, it's been a year to remember.
EVITA
If Evita didn't pop into your head the moment you read "viral moments on social media", then we'd love to know what did! (It could have been the many videos of Hamilton escape out of a window, but we're going to talk about that shortly). London found itself at the center of the conversation thanks to Evita, a revival that became one of the year's most talked about productions, both inside and outside of the theater.

The show was all over social media due to the striking balcony scene with Rachel Zegler, which rapidly spread across platforms. This revival of Evita transformed a classic musical into a must-see event and demonstrated how a single visual moment can introduce theater to an entirely new, younger audience.

HAMILTON
Hamilton marked a milestone in 2025, celebrating 10 years on stage since its groundbreaking debut. Over the past decade, Lin-Manuel Miranda's revolutionary blend of hip-hop, history and theater has transformed Broadway, drawing audiences from around the world and inspiring a new generation of musical theater fans.
The original Aaron Burr, Leslie Odom Jr. returned to the room where it happens and reprised his role! He originally received a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2016, so we can only imagine how magical it was for him to repeat his own history.

Like Evita, Hamilton also has its social media moment with a trend of content creators dressing as Hamilton and climbing out of their windows whilst lip-syncing to "Best of Wives and Best of Women" - Lin Manuel Miranda also joined in on the trend... if you haven't seen it yet, now's your chance!

PADDINGTON
The West End enjoyed a box-office phenomenon with Paddington, which quickly became one of 2025's hottest tickets. Performances sold out at speed, with demand soaring as outstanding reviews rolled in and word spread about the productions appeal. Ticket sales went into overdrive and reminded us of the power of well-loved nostalgic stories that tap into your inner child, proving that family-focused theater, done right, is still at the heart of the industry.

DEATH BECOMES HER
Speaking of nostalgia, Broadway leaned into it with Death Becomes Her emerging as a surprise stand out. This long-awaited debut transformed a cult film into a glossy, crowd-pleasing musical, which also found itself all over social media thanks to its slow-motion falling sequence that trended widely online and the line "that was rude, that was pretty...rude" being used all over the world.
BILL AND TED
Another surprising announcement was Bill and Ted heading to Broadway - a move that satisfied our appetite for more cult titles, playful reinventions and unexpected adaptations.
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
Bristol (UK) emerged as a place for future hits to test the waters - and what a splash it made! The Greatest Showman debuted in the city, generating significant industry buzz and prompting speculation about potential transfers. With eyes firmly on the West End and Broadway, it's only a matter of time before we see the headlines announcing a transfer.
OUR PREDICTIONS FOR 2026
If 2025 is anything to go by, I predict more revivals to crop up - but not ones that just blow the dust off an old script, but instead flip the entire script on its head, ones that spark conversation and divide opinion. The kind that makes you want to see it for yourself because you can't believe what you're hearing. We're not talking minor dialogue tweaks, or a new song added - but full reinventions of classic musicals. I believe thinking outside the box is the new way to reinvent theater, rules are made to be broken.
