Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter Star In Shaw’s Scandalous Classic

Taking on one of George Bernard Shaw's most controversial works, stage and screen icon Imelda Staunton returns to the West End in formidable form for 2025! Starring alongside her real-life daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton). Directed by Dominic Cooke, with whom Staunton previously collaborated on Follies and Hello, Dolly!, this revival marks the play's first major London outing since 2010.

Once banned for its candid portrayal of sex work and the economic forces that drive it, Shaw's 1902 drama tells the story of Vivie Warren, a bright Cambridge graduate whose homecoming unearths the uncomfortable truth about her mother's source of wealth: a career as a brothel madam.

Critic Reviews Of Mrs Warren's Profession

"Starring with her daughter Bessie Carter, Imelda Staunton is typically amazing in the startlingly fresh Bernard Shaw sex worker drama" - TimeOut

"Imelda Staunton and her daughter are superbly matched in Mrs Warren's Profession" - The Independent

"The big scenes between mother and daughter are quietly tremendous, and crackle with a genuine sense of a familial bond without becoming cosy." - The Telegraph

"Filial tangles, played with the actor's real-life daughter Bessie Carter, bring George Bernard Shaw's once-banned drama to life" - The Guardian

"The torrent of words beats you into submission. Even with a text that has been cut down and clarified by Cooke himself, you still sense Shaw's hectoring presence." - The Times
