Why see The Lives of Others?

Casting A Shadow Over The West End

A major new stage adaptation of one of the twenty-first century’s most critically lauded films comes to The Adelphi Theatre! Robert Icke directs the Academy Award-winning story following acclaimed productions including OedipusHamlet, and The Doctor.

Starring Keira Knightley, Luke Thompson, and Stephen Dillane, The Lives of Others, released nearly twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, is known for distinguishing itself from earlier, lighter depictions of East Germany by offering a more sombre and personal examination of surveillance under totalitarian rule.

What's The Story?

Set in East Berlin in 1984, The Lives of Others follows a playwright and an actress as the Stasi quietly invades their lives. From the attic above their apartment, officer Captain Gerd Wiesler listens to their unfolding secrets and soon finds himself unexpectedly drawn into the lives of the people he is spying on, shifting the story from political surveillance into one of human connection.
