Why see Franz & Marie?

A Love Worth Fighting For

Georg Buchner's groundbreaking Woyzeck sets the inspiration for Franz & Marie, one of theatre's greatest tragedies. Created by members of cult Kent band The Singing Loins and adapted by Teresa Howard for a 2026 audience, Franz & Marie features a company of 14 actor-musicians and new orchestrations by Steven Edis, staying true to its timeless themes of love, poverty, trauma, class inequality and toxic masculinity.

What's the Story?

Set in 19th-century Europe, Franz & Marie follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stranded with his platoon at a remote military outpost after returning from the front line. Tormented by disturbing visions and haunted by the horrors of war, Franz struggles to distinguish reality from his increasingly fractured mind. But through it all, one thing keeps him going: his love for Marie and their young son.

Unable to leave his post to marry the woman he loves, Franz is determined to provide for his family, whatever the cost.
