Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike at Charing Cross Theatre

Why see Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike?

The London Premiere of Christopher Durang's Tony Winner

Glorious stage and screen icon Janie Dee is back to thrill audiences as she takes the lead in the London premiere of Christopher Durang's critically acclaimed comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Postponed due to the pandemic, the production is finally showing at the Charing Cross Theatre until January 8th!

What is the story?

First running on Broadway in 2013, the critically acclaimed, Tony-winning play borrows elements from Chekov's undisputed masterpiece Uncle Vanya, such as character names, the setting of a cherry orchard, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home. Adult siblings Vanya and Sonia still live in their old family home, bemoaning missed opportunities and lost dreams. When their young movie star sister Mash arrives with her boy toy Spike, Durang's wit whips up an absurd whirlwind of one-upmanship, broken mugs, and frayed nerves.

No knowledge of Chekhov required, but getting some of the references will give you an extra chuckle. All actors great, but the leads (Vanya, Sophia, Masha) especially good. Masha is the real Norma Desmond, a fading egotistical B-movie actress full of vanities and romantic delusions. ... Read more
