The Cherry Orchard

The Cherry Orchard at Harold Pinter Theatre

Why see The Cherry Orchard?

Kristin Scott Thomas Stars In New Adaptation!

Writer Conor McPherson (The WeirThe Girl From The North Country) turns his attention to one of theatre's greatest works, with Olivier and Tony Award nominee Ian Rickson (Uncle VanyaJerusalemThe Weir) directing this new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard in London! The production is set to star five-time BAFTA Award winner and British icon Kristin Scott Thomas as Lyubov Ranevskaya.

First performed in Moscow in 1904, Chekhov's final play examines Russia at a time of huge social change, when social mobility and political unrest were chipping away at the beliefs the upper classes had held for centuries.

WHAT IS THE CHERRY ORCHARD ABOUT?

After living in Paris for five years, Madame Ranevskaya returns home to her family's estate, which is about to be sold at auction. The house, along with the vast cherry orchard in its grounds, holds so many memories for her that she is loath to give it up. She and her assembled family members are unable to agree on what action to take, and as the auction draws ever closer, they spend their days in a haze of distraction and uncertainty.
