Jessie Buckley Stars In Afterbirth
Giving birth is only the beginning; it’s what comes next that truly shakes you. BAFTA, Golden Globe, Olivier and Academy Award winner Jessie Buckley (Hamnet; Cabaret) stars in the world premiere of Afterbirth by Nina Segal (Antigone Exits; Cow|Deer) at the Royal Court. Unpacking the unsettling chaos that is early parenthood, the production is directed by Maria Aberg ([Blank]) and with visual design coming from Rosanna Vize (The Other Place). With Jessie Buckley returning to the London stage, this Royal Court co-commission with English Touring Theatre is set to be one of the most anticipated highlights of the Royal Court's upcoming season. Tickets will fly so don't miss out.
What Is The Story?
On the surface, every box seems to have been ticked: the delivery went smoothly, the baby is doing great, and new mother Annie insists she couldn't be doing better. She absolutely insists it. Couldn’t be doing better at all. Just great. Of course, the reality of that post-natal survival period is actually anything but. Equal parts hilarious, dramatic and brutally honest and open, Afterbirth is about a woman’s fight to keep herself intact after everything changes.
