Tilda Swinton reprises Man To Man role
Three decades on from her first performance in the role at Royal Court and the Traverse Theatre, Tilda Swinton returns to the stage as Ella/Max Geriche in Man to Man, Manfred Karge's extraordinary portrait of survival and transformation. Directed by the award winning Stephen Unwin (The Conquest of the South Pole) and with design by Bunny Christie (People, Places and Things), this modern classic is revived for a new generation, ahead of international runs at the Berliner Ensemble and in New York City.
Set in turbulent 1930s Germany, Man to Man tells story of Ella Gericke, a woman who assumes her dead husband's identity to survive in a man's world. As "Max" she navigates the rise and fall of regimes and endures poverty, war and political oppression, all whilst wrestling with the cost of living a lie. Through Ella's eyes, we witness the shifting landscape of German history as she fights to retain her humanity in a society built on fear and conformity.
