Road at Jerwood Theatre Downstairs

Why see Road?

Celebrating The indomitable human spirit

First premiering in 2009 during Bench Theatre's 40th anniversary season, Jim Cartwright's seminal play about hope overcoming struggle comes to the Royal Court Theatre in 2017. The production will be helmed by John Tiffany whose most recent work includes Harry Potter & The Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre and previous Royal Court works such as The Twits, Hope, and Let the Right One In. Set during the troubled Eighties, we follow the residents of a Lancashire street as they prepare for a huge party. However, the political undercurrents and tension of a recession affect each person in different ways.

With a vagrant as your narrator and tour guide, you'll be introduced to colourful group array of characters, who seek escape from the drudgery of their poverty-stricken lives. Using humour and bittersweet observations, Road is a rip-roaring trip down memory lane, celebrating the resilience of human spirit.
