The Playboy Of The Western World

The Playboy Of The Western World at National Theatre, Lyttelton

Why see The Playboy Of The Western World?

Irish Classic

Artistic director of Dublin's Abbey Theatre, Catriona McLaughin, revives J M Synge's rich Irish play at the National Theatre this winter! A stellar Irish cast with a slew of awards and nominations between them leads the performance, with Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan, Anna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment) and Derry Girls' Siobhan McSweeney all featuring in this brilliant classic, which was central to the Literary Revival movement in Ireland.

What is the story?

Dreamer Christy Mahon takes refuge in a pub, claiming to have killed his oppressive father. His tales of bravery and danger immediately charm the locals, but when it becomes apparent that there is more to his stories than first thought, the community's mood begins to change.

Cracking entertainment

This is cracking entertainment, highly amusing and brilliantly performed. It feels like a step back in time to a rural world in Ireland where a distraction from mundane life is desperately needed. And it comes perfectly in the form of Robert Sheehan, triggering the marvellously feisty Niamh Cusack and pretty Ruth Negga to go into battle for his attentions. A wonderful yarn, beautifully directed with an evocative set. Go see it and it's only 2 hours 10 minutes! ... Read more
