Saint George and The Dragon

Saint George and The Dragon at National Theatre, Olivier

Why see Saint George and The Dragon?

Exploring "Englishness" through the patron saint

Distinguished playwright Rory Mullarkey and director Lyndsay Turner join forces for this world premiere! A new stage adaptation of the story of England's patron saint, we go further into the knight's tale as we've never gone before, in this epic folk tale. Find a new spin on how the knight transmuted into myth, and into sainthood, helped on the way by songs and dance, provided by Gran Olding and Lynne Page, respectfully. Discover how the foreign figure becomes associated with England over the centuries, and ask yourself what it means to be English in today's society, especially with the rise of nationalism since 2016.

Mullarkey has achieved much in his recent career. As well as being named co-winner (with Alice Birch) of the 2014 George Devine Award for Playwriting, he was also awarded the Royal Court Theatre's Harold Pinter prize, only the third person to do so. Opening this October at the Olivier Theatre, dates are yet to be confirmed. Watch this space for new details!
