Why see Martin Guerre?

A New Folk Revival

From the creators behind the global smash hit musical Les Misérables comes a revival of their Olivier Award-winning masterpiece Martin Guerre, running in London for the first time since the 1990s. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg’s classic musical is completely reimagined in an in-the-round staging at the Old Vic. Directed by Olivier and Tony winner Matthew Warchus (Matilda, God of Carnage), the production features fresh new music by Schonberg and new lyrics by Boublil alongside Annabel Mutale Reed and Paul Hodge.

What Is The Story?

Martin Guerre is a musical based on the extraordinary true historical story of a small French village upended by a tale of impersonation. When a man claiming to be the long-lost Martin Guerre arrives home after years of absence, the villagers believe his story. Bertrande, Martin’s wife, is aware this is not the real Martin, yet falls deeply in love with this new impostor. But when suspicions come to the fore around town, as violence threatens to erupt a trial is set to settle it all.
