Consumed
A black comedy on inherited trauma

The vibrance and dark viscosity of Kelly's writing allows this dark comedy about a misbegotten birthday party to tip into a grand guignol study of pain and trauma without ever losing its grip.

Fresh from a hit national tour and a sold-out Fringe run at the Traverse, Consumed arrives in London with all the bite that has made it one of the most exciting new plays of recent years, and worthy winner of the 2022 Womens' Prize for Playwriting. Karis Kelly's debut play, built from personal research into Northern Irish identity and inherited trauma, is a brilliant black comedy channeling the region's trademark dark wit while holding space for tenderness and resolution.
When the women of the McAuley family gather in their Bangor home to celebrate matriarch Eileen's 90th birthday, it quickly becomes clear that no one is ready for a party. Four generations arrive carrying secrets and unresolved histories, and as the evening unfolds, the familiar kitchen-sink setting begins to tilt into something stranger, haunted by the ghosts they've been trying to outrun.
