Expecting

A timely look at modern adulthood
Why see Expecting?
Andy Sandberg Directs
Written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola, Expecting is a brand new play running from January - March as part of Riverside Studios’ new season! Exploring the modern phenomenon of delayed parenthood, it forms part of a major run of new writing directed by Andy Sandberg, and brings back together the team behind the Off-Broadway hit Straight, which was a New York Times critic’s pick. Sandberg made history in 2009 as the youngest Tony Award-winning producer ever at the time, for the Broadway revival of Hair, while Elmegreen and Fornarola’s award-winning work spans Off-Broadway productions, TV and major family film franchises. Together this is set to be a searing, relatable new look at the realities of modern adulthood.
What is it about?
Zoey and Ethan are trying to decide whether they should start a family or not, weighing the logical realities of parenting against their ambitions and comfortable routines. At the same time, Trish, Zoey’s little sister, is already managing the day-to-day chaos of raising two children while seeing a new boyfriend, Matt. In a modern society of declining global birthrates and complex professional landscapes, Expecting holds a lens up to the present-day struggle of trying to have everything versus what really matters, and whether anyone ever really feels like they’re “ready”.
