Bryn terfel shows us why he is a Master-singer!

Bryn Terfel leads Wagner's comic opera as Kasper Holten departs the Royal Opera House as director in 2017. The story of society ingenue Eva and her father's strange edict that she may only marry the winner of the local singing contest. Unfortunately she falls head over heels for Walther (Terfel), who must prove his worth by becoming a master-singer, win the contest and her hand. However, the snobbery of the local singing guild prevent him from entering the competition; but Walther has a plan up his sleeve....

As the two lovebirds attempt to run away together, their plans all but turn to dust thanks to an impromptu riot. Taking pity on Walther, the Mastersinger Hans Sachs helps him write a new song for the competition. Celebrating national culture and what it means to be German, the Mastersingers accept this new entry warmly and without prejudice, naming Walther the victor, and granting him his marriage with Eva. A true Wagner opera, the nationalistic overtures within the work has exposed Die Meistersinger to a lot of external scrutiny, making it one of the composer's most strangely received.

Terfel's first role in Wagner's opera was actually in 2010 singing the part of Hans Sachs; one of opera's most strenuous roles, as the character is virtually on stage for the entirety of the opera.
