Britten's brooding opera lands at Royal Opera House this May
The world renowned Royal Ballet and Opera bring Benjamin Britten's oceanic masterpiece back to London, roaring into the Royal Opera House for a limited season in May 2026. Telling the tale of a fisherman ostracised by his community after a dreadful accident, Peter Grimes features one of the most singular and powerful scores in modern opera.
In a small coastal community, Peter Grimes is more isolated than anyone. Following the tragic death of his apprentice, the townspeople have turned their backs on him, believing him to be responsible. Grimes is hell-bent on proving the town wrong about him, and hires a new apprentice. But the unforgiving sea, and a community that hates him, will push Peter's sanity to breaking point. Another awful end seems to loom over the ferocious waves - an end that could be Peter's undoing.
