Why see Carmen La Cubana?

A Modern Retelling of Bizet's Opera Comique Carmen

Bizet's operatic masterpiece gets a modern makeover in the UK premiere of Carmen La Cubana, transporting the action to the sweltering climes and political turmoil of Cuba during the revolution of 1958. Inspired by Oscar Hammerstein II's 1943 Broadway musical Carmen Jones, the production is helmed by well known British opera and theatre director Christopher Renshaw with new arrangements by Tony-winning Hamilton music director Alex Lacamoire.

Set in Havana, on the eve of the Cuban revolution, this new adaptation fuses the heady magic of salsa, mambo, rumba and cha cha music and dance with the original opera comique's fiery characters. Their unreturned passions and scorned love incites a spiral of tragic violence, all centred on the fatally attractive femme fatale Carmen.
