English National Opera - Breaking the Waves

It is not easy to find new operas that command attention, tell their story lucidly and create a powerful, permeating mood. Dark and daring, Breaking the Waves does all this with sensitivity and style.

Why see English National Opera - Breaking the Waves?
Modern Masterpiece
Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek's daringly dark, award-winning modern masterpiece Breaking The Waves comes to the London Coliseum, featuring a cast of some of the most esteemed performers of our times; Grammy Award-nominated Lauren Snouffer as Bess McNeill and Liam James Karai. Directed by Tinuke Craig and conducted by Joana Carneiro, see why this modern opera is rightly viewed as one of the best works of the 21st century.
Based on Lars von Trier's film of the same name, the story takes place in the Scottish Highlands of the 1970s and chronicles the devoted relationship between Bess and her husband Jan. When Jan becomes paralyzed after an almost fatal accident, he comes up with a proposal that tests and takes their devotion to the extreme.
