Giselle

Giselle at London Coliseum

Why see Giselle?

the perils of love

Towering walls, war-torn landscapes, and ghostly revenge - this is Akram Khan's Giselle, a socially charged, contemporary meditation on the 1841 ballet that has inspired dancers worldwide for generations. Since its premiere in 2016, Akram Khan's version has been hailed as one of the most exciting productions of the past decade - featuring eerie, evocative visuals from Oscar-winner Tim Yip and a driving, live score by Vincenzo Lamagna. Don't miss the show, performed by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.

What Is The Story?
In Akram Khan's reimagining of Giselle, Giselle is part of a marginalized community of migrant workers known as the Outcasts, living under harsh conditions and separated from the powerful factory Landlords by a towering wall that stands as a stark symbol of inequality. In this environment, Giselle finds love with Albrecht, who appears to share her world and struggles. However, the fragile trust between them is shattered when it emerges that Albrecht is secretly one of the Landlords. Betrayal drives Giselle to a tragic transformation: she becomes one of the Wilis, supernatural women who exact revenge on those who have wronged them

Rosie

Giselle Ballet

A young peasant girl, Giselle, is in love with Albrecht, a Duke who hides his title and his engagement to another. When Giselle discovers he has deceived her, she is driven to madness, and dies of a broken heart. I saw Giselle at the Coliseum in London with a live orchestra. The dancing was beautiful and the storyline was both heartbreaking and even funny at times. It is only the second ballet I have seen as I saw the Nutcracker a few years ago. I had an amazing view of both the orchestra and the stage. Watching the dancers on stage inspired me and made me want to continue dancing. ... Read more
