The new musical by Spring Awakening's Duncan Sheik
As part of the inaugural season of The Other Palace (renamed from the current St James Theatre) in 2017, Duncan Sheik's UK Premiere of a haunting musical ghost story arrives in April. The composer of hit musicals Spring Awakening and American Psycho, this production originated in 2009 as a concept album, and premiered in San Diego the following year to critical acclaim. History and the supernatural collide during the Second World War in this familial exploration of loyalty and tension, with a score that has been deemed daring for it's bleakness.
When the curmudgeonly owner of a dilapidated lighthouse on the Eastern coast of America takes in her orphaned nephew, she is forced to confront tragic truths from her past. Her nephew's father was killed in 1942 over the Pacific, and her Japanese immigrant employee causes in him feelings of hate and betrayal towards his aunt for harbouring "the enemy". When the lighthouse becomes sequestered under military control due to the nearby lurking German U-boats, Yasuhiro is ordered away as a suspected spy, leading Lilly to examine her own ancestral connections to the Axis powers.
