Daytona

Daytona at Theatre Royal Haymarket

Why see Daytona?

Maureen Lipman leads this new West End transfer from the Park Theatre in Finsbury, which saw her garner critical acclaim for her performance. In this play we see an old-married Jewish couple coping with unhealed scars of the past when drama suddenly rears its ugly head, as a figure not seen for 30 years suddenly bursts into their lives and progresses to turn them upside down.

WHAT IS THE SHOW ABOUT?

Set in a modest apartment in 1986 New York, Elli and Joe lead a quiet life punctuated with their love for ballroom dancing. Ahead of the following night's competition, Elli goes to pick up her ballroom gown. In her absence, her husband's ebullient brother Billy appears in a fluster.

Not having seen each other for 30 years, Joe is wary of his brother's reasons for turning up out of the blue, and with good reason - on holiday in Florida, Billy took brutal revenge on a man who had tortured him during incarceration at a German concentration camp during the war. As a result, he fled the state, and is now seeking refuge with his brother

When Elli arrives back, she is displeased to see Billy, least of all to hear of his current drama. But there is more lurking underneath her icy demeanour, a story of lost love and myster, which could obliterate the relatively peaceful marriage she has with the bucolic Joe.
