Launching a major five-year Shakespeare series for Chris Harper Productions, Tom Morris (War Horse, Touching the Void) directs trailblazer David Harewood (Homeland, Supergirl) - the first Black actor to play Othello at the National Theatre in 1997 - in a searing, contemporary take on the Bard's tale of jealousy and betrayal, featuring music by Grammy nominated PJ Harvey.
General. Nobleman. Devoted husband. Othello, the celebrated war hero of Venice, seemingly has it all. His only solace in a world of political tension and shifting loyalties is his loving wife Desdemona, who loves him fiercely - and he, her. But when Othello overlooks his ensign Iago for a captaincy in favour of the gallant Cassio, Iago sets a cunning plan in motion. Using their secret marriage to stir Desdemona's former suitor Roderigo into action, Iago denounces the general to her father and undermines Othello's trust in those closest to him.
As Iago's web of deceit tightens, Othello is driven deeper into suspicion and despair over Desdemona's faithfulness. The tragic consequences that follow result from manipulation, misplaced trust and a terrible decision made in a moment of overwhelming doubt.
