Speech and Debate

Why see Speech and Debate?

A UK premiere by the Tony-winning playwright

Tony-winning playwright Stephen Karam brings this riveting black comedy to London's Trafalgar Studios in February, for its UK premiere starring Douglas Booth and Tony Revolori. Set in an American high school, a group of misfits who have never met find themselves bonding when a sex scandal engulfs one of the teaching staff. Seizing on the chaos within the school hierarchy, the group decide to form a debate team, where they can finally voice their thoughts, beliefs, and a few unsavoury truths about the school. Dealing with the modern issues of homophobia, teenage alienation and problems with online privacy, this hilarious comedy manages to examine the troubles facing teens today.

With theatre company Defibrillator bringing Karam's acclaimed play to London, it is worth noting that this year the playwright won no less than four Tony Awards including Best New Play for his currently running Broadway play "The Humans", which also deals with the struggles of Noughties American youth. Speech and Debate will be helmed by Tom Attenborough, known for his successful UK tour of Noel Coward's play Private Lives.
