Why see Death Of A Salesman?
Paul Mescal at The National Theatre
The magic of Mescal heads to the National's Lyttelton Theatre in 2027 as Rebecca Frecknall directs Arthur Miller's classic work Death of a Salesman. With a star-studded cast to boot - Gladiator 2 star and Olivier Award-winner Paul Mescal, to name just one - this revival is sure to be one of the most talked-about events of 2026.
A play that explores the binding grip of the 'American Dream', Death of a Salesman won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949, solidifying Arthur Miller as one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century.
What is Death of a Salesman about?
On his return from a business trip, Willy Loman becomes enraged to find his two sons, Biff and Happy, staying at the family home. In a series of flashbacks, we learn more about the Lomans and their intricate - and sometimes secretive - family life. From affairs to jealousy, we chart the highs and lows of one family on the edge of destruction, and their quest for fulfilment.
As part of the National Theatre's 2027 repertory season, Death of a Salesman will play alongside A Whistle in the Dark, with Mescal leading the ensemble across both productions. This marks the second collaboration between Frecknall and Mescal, following A Streetcar Named Desire, for which Mescal won an Olivier Award.
