Why see Fun Home?
The multi-Tony Award-winning blockbuster
Direct from Broadway and winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Fun Home heads to the Voung Vic in June 2018. Based on the groundbreaking 2006 graphic novel of the same name by Alison Bechdel. The story traces Bechdel's own childhood and adolescence, with particular focus on her uneasy relationship with her father Bruce and her coming out as a lesbian.
A transatlantic transfer
With lyrics and book by Lisa Kron (Voyage to Lesbos) and music from Jeanine Tesori (Violet) Fun Home premiered at The Public Theater in 2013 and was lavished with critical acclaim. Ben Brantley of the New York Times hailed it as a "beautiful heartbreaker", with "multidimensional" characters who offered a refreshing change from musical theatre's more campy portrayals. The Young Vic production will be directed by Sam Gold, who led both New York productions. Casting for the musical is yet to be confirmed.
What is it about?
An inventively staged patchwork of memories and conversations taking place over three different time periods, the show is written by Lisa Kron (Voyage to Lesbos) and is laced together with a remarkable, Seventies-inflected score from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie).
The musical traces the life of Alison Bechdel through three separate periods of her life, weaving scenes and conversations together into a non-linear patchwork. At the heart of Alison's story is her alcoholic father Bruce, a domineering man who devotes the attention that he denies his children on decorating the Pennsylvania family home and maintaining his vast collection of antiques. Bruce killed himself soon after Alison came out as a lesbian during college, and looking back, she wonders what part this revelation played in his suicide; she discovers her father held more secrets than first thought.
