There's something in the water

Matt Smith swaps the dragons of Westeros for the West End as he makes his much-anticipated stage return in this brand-new, boldly reimagined production of Henrik Ibsen's 1883 play by Thomas Ostermeier. Tipped as a seminal and interactive staging from the esteemed German theatremaker, follow Smith as he stars as a doctor faced with uncovering a public health crisis at a local spa, much to the chagrin of the town's authorities.

While his most famous role was that of another doctor, Matt Smith has proven to be an enigmatic and varied performer with a back catalog that encompasses charismatic performances of both heroes and villains. His last West End role was opposite The Crown co-star Claire Foy in Duncan Macmillan's Lungs, live-streamed at The Old Vic during the 2020 Lockdowns.

What is the story?

Dr. Thomas Stockmann is a doctor in a small town who stumbles upon some terrible news - the town's main source of income, the local spa, has toxic contaminated water. Seeking to reveal the truth and save lives in the process, Stockmann publishes his findings only to receive vilification from the town. The news could destroy the town's economy, and so Stockmann receives pressure to retract his statement. What follows is a moral dilemma, can he retain his integrity, or will Stockmann cover up his findings to save face?
