FABULOUS!!!

Just left tonight’s show. Absolutely loved it!!! I disagree with all of these reviews. It was fantastic. Jason was amazing and so funny!!! The tin man standing in for Ashley was great and the whole thing was uplifting and full of energy! No one left where we were sitting. The last show we saw a few weeks ago was Ben Elton’s woke version of we will rock you. Now THAT show was like a school play!! We loved Wizard and we’ll be back again before the end of the run. Sorry guys!!

WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE

If I'd relied on the reviews that I'd seen about this show, I wouldn't had gone. However, I am so glad I went. I had a wonderful experience - the cast is fabulous - scarecrow, tin man and lion are brilliant. I really enjoyed the show.

WIZARDRY IN OZ

Jason Manford's performance in 'The Wizard of Oz' at the London Palladium was truly captivating. His comedic timing and charismatic presence added an engaging layer to the classic tale. The production itself was a visual delight, with impressive sets and costumes that brought the magical world of Oz to life. Manford's portrayal of the Cowardly Lion was both endearing and hilarious, earning him well-deserved laughs and applause from the audience. His chemistry with the rest of the cast, including Dorothy and her companions, contributed to the overall charm of the show. While staying true to the heart of the original story, Manford's interpretation added a fresh and enjoyable twist to the timeless production."

JUST BRILLIANT!

I was rapt from the very beginning. Dorothy has a wonderful singing voice and stage presence. Jason Manford was amazing as the cowardly lion and had everyone laughing. We attended the signed performance, where the BSL interpreter was absolutely brilliant! Jason Manford tried to involve her at times, which was really amusing. Ashley Banjo was very good in my opinion; please remember he is a dancer/choreographer, not a singer. I thought his singing and acting were impressive and he played a convincing part. I would 100% recommend going to see this, as it is fun entertainment for the whole family.

AMAZING

Just returned from the final show and thought it was fabulous, the cast were all brilliant and Dorothy had a beautiful.voice as did the whole cast. The puppeteer that worked toto was brilliant , and you really ended up believing he was a real dog. Think the people that gave this show 1 star must have been watching a different show

LOVED IT!

Went with friends and we all loved it! The Vivienne was the stand out to me but everything was brilliant. The costumes, the set, the singing amazing! Would thoroughly recommend!

GREAT CAST, LOVELY SHOW

Jason Manford as the cowardly lion was outstanding and made everyone laugh with his comic acting. He has a great singing voice too. Ashley Banjo was also very good, as was Gary Wilmot. Thought Dorothy should have been played by someone who looked younger. Overall a very entertaining show.

A COLOURFUL NIGHT OF MUSICAL FUN.

Costumes and staging were visually engaging. The casting of Ashley Banjo as the Tin Man was perfect , he did a great job making his West End debut. The smallest member of the cast , besides Toto , was Charlotte St Croix , a short but sassy solo gave us a taste of her star quality. I believe she is understudying Dorothy , I will buy tickets to see it again if she takes the lead. A fun night of colour , humour and song .

4.0 star rating Mel from London, England

A GREAT SHOW

Jason Manford is outstanding as the cowardly lion. The actors playing Dorothy and the good witch had amazing voices. I didn’t like the puppet Toto as the puppeteer was distracting. Why not use a real dog?

4.0 star rating Becky from Lancaster

FABULOUS

I have read some very negative reviews but this show when I saw it ( Thursday matinee) was fabulous and highly entertaining. It's a different interpretation which some people don't seem to appreciate. The use of film as a backdrop is imaginative and helpful ( except when it overexplains the farm hands turning into the characters in Oz - no need really). The ensemble cast of munchkins et al are brilliant. Dorothy carries her role and has a great singing voice - (what did you want? Julie Garland and Eva Cassidy are both dead!) Toto is a joy - he could have been given more solo moments as he is a bit overshadowed. The scarecrow, tin man and lion are all fantastic especially Jason Manford who gives us exactly what we want by being exactly like the film character - his is a stand out performance. The whole thing is fun fun fun and my autistic son, who always leaves any performance at the interval, stayed for the whole duration, smiling and laughing. Thank you cast and crew!!!

GOOD SHOW

An excellent afternoon's entertainment. Good view even from up in the gods. Set simple but effective and Toto was brilliant. Cast's energy at the end unbelievable.

COLOURFUL AND FULL OF FUN

Let's get the bad points out the way. Shame no one from the West End production was in the Oxford show. Also alot of video used. Besides that it was great. The singing was great, not messed about with so could recognise the tunes. The special effects were good, the hurricane really good. Loved the scarecrow really got into the part. We had a great granny and 6 year old both came out " following the yellow brick road". Thank you new theatre for the booster seat for the little on. Wonderful afternoon out.

3.0 star rating George Ritchie from London, England

GREAT SONGS, TWO GREAT SINGERS, LUMPY SHOW

Toto and the Witch from the East are fantastic. The songs are just the way we like them and the lion is played brilliantly. But the psychedelic costumes and massive overuse of film make the experience too cinematic. The first half trigs along ok but really the show only come alive after the interval. The Wicked witch plays her role like a pantomime villainess with great humour, and the lead (Dorothy) has a wonderful voice. For my 90 year old mother it was a blast. For my mid 20s kids it was silly fluff. For me it was an exaggerated kaleidoscope of bright colours which told the heart of the story in the end but was too frantic and lacked gentleness. Take a classic and jazz it up was the production idea, but simply enhancing the costume colours was not enough to achieve that aim. The seats were expensive in the stalls and I’d rather watch the brilliance of Book of Mormon ant night.

BIT OF A LET DOWN - EXCEPT JASON

Went to see it with an open mind, it's not actually what I thought - Dorothy is a fab singer but I was surprised she was alot older, and tbh not particularly likeable ...I didn't really care if she got home she was annoying! Lovely voice great actor I'm sure. Fav by far was the star presence of Jason Manford as the lion. What a great job - you could feel the whole room cheer up when he came on The wicked witch plays it comedic, really wasn't for me I wanted her to be scary. Monkeys don't fly....come on....I found that a big let down. 2 just sit there at a laptop? Great dancers, great costumes....I liked Ashley banjo he was impressive, I liked the scarecrow - you care about them. I don't know - see what you think - it just wasn't for me and it's alot of money to come away thinking I it wasn't all that! People behind me coming out of the theatre raving about it though. * Just a note for small children, it's super loud.... there's bangs flashes and it makes you jump from the start.

3.0 star rating Danielle Whitmore from Suffolk

NOT THE DOROTHY I RELATED TO, MECHANICAL DOG WAS A LET DOWN BUT THE LION MADE IT FOR ME

As an avid repeat childhood viewer I did just that….I grew up watching W.O.O over and over. It was a timeless fantasy film where as a small child, most girls I knew loved and wanted to be Dorothy and have a dog named Toto. My take on this play is they wanted to modernise it-making it politically correct and culturally neutral to a point where the film was lost for me. The mechanical dog was a let down-the puppeteer left me confused and distracted and what’s more- What happened to health and safety? Running about with a dog on a stick left me feeling sorry for him the whole play. Some of the singing was good and in parts fantastic and the lion was outstanding. He brought the familiarity back-would I recommend it? If you’ve not watched the film then yes…you get the story line and a fun panto like play but for those of us that wanted to be the original Dorothy? Sadly you’ll be disappointed and who would have named their dog after a dog on a stick?

FELT LIKE IT WAS DONE ON THE CHEAP, BUT GOOD PERFORMERS

way too many videos in lieu of theatrical special effects which was v disappointing. Felt like it was done on the cheap - assumed there would be flying monkeys but nothing. Costumes good. Jason Manford excellent. Literally about 10 munchkins - too tight to pay for more actors and costumes I guess. Below par, though not wholly unenjoyable. Save yourself £70 and see the movie

3.0 star rating MUMof1 from London, England

“DEFINITELY NOT IN KANSAS NOW, TOTO!”

I’ve no idea which were the munchkins either. No-one was munchkin-esque and I didn’t hear any of the classic munchkins songs. The puppet version of Toto didn’t work, completely lacked the cuteness factor and the person operating it, leaping all over the stage to make the puppet come to life, was maddeningly distracting. The flying monkeys NOT flying, was disappointing and totally missed a trick. The background videos of a New York skyline (with strange rockets and space-ships) while Dorothy was supposed to be in Oz was definitely puzzling. Most characters were so poorly developed that it was difficult to care about them at all. I would put Dorothy, firmly in this category, along with the straw-man, tin-man and the aunt and uncle. A bit like biting into a cheese sandwich to find that it contains only a tiny shred of day-old lettuce… I can understand why traditionalists could be outraged by all this. HOWEVER, I personally, embrace change and I’m excited by unusual takes on traditional productions. Some of the quirky updates here were amusing, such as the good witch entering and exiting the stage on a bright pink Vespa instead of appearing in the classic puff of smoke. I also liked the tin-man doing a bit of body-popping. The singing by the cast who appeared in Wimbledon was generally strong, with Dorothy’s voice and that of the good witch surprisingly impressive. Overall, despite being confused even now about whether I saw a musical or a pantomime (in March!) and about whether we should have been quiet or shouting out “He’s BEHIND you” at the appropriate points, I actually enjoyed the show and admired the huge amounts of energy that the cast put in right till the very end. It’s just a shame that we spent most of the show constantly pining for the real stars - the endearingly sweet Lion and the seething evil witch - to come back on stage. They were both fantastic and, along, with the great music, carried the entire show.

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

Terrible show. Low profile and low budget. Just waste of time and money

WAS THE SET UPSCALED FROM A SCHOOL PRODUCTION?

Flying monkeys, the wicked witch zooming in from above, pitch perfect singing and memorable songs . . . are just a few of the things you would expect - but will not find in this production. Gary Wilmot and Dianne Pilkington are stand out performers with almost all the cast being at the very least competent. Unfortunately both the big names brought in for star appeal fail to hold a single note. If their parts were just cameos then it might have been fine, but as central characters it rather marred the whole show. The tickets were cheap, bought at release, and my wife says it is no worse than many of the 10 week fillers we have seen at the Palladium. If you are thinking of buying some cheap tickets - do so, just keep your expectations like the cast, firmly on the ground.

THANK WIZARD FOR JASON

Disappointing from the off! Was like an cheap amateur production in my opinion! The sets were really basic and disappointing, could have done so much with it, mostly projected onto a screen in a cinematic style, the yellow brick road consisted of three large arrows that lit up as yellow bricks and they pushed around in front of a screen attempting to make it look like they were travelling! The whole thing didn’t know what it wanted to be … so it started with projected pictures of newspapers to give you a time line (we know when wizard was set), then Glinda came on looking like a cross between Barbie and a pink lady riding a pink moped looking like it was set in the 50s or vegas type style, the tin man was more of a robot and was very much just Ashley Banjo doing a bit of robotic dancing with some puffs of smoke coming out of him and he def can’t sing! Toto was a puppet that a man ran round with the whole show (to be fair a great puppet and he moved it so cleverly) but still odd as I watched him more than the dog. The munchkins just didn’t fit the bill at all and the wicked witch lived in wicked witch industries and was played in a comedic style (not scary at all), she also rode a bike and her broomstick fired what seemed like fire except the pyros didn’t always work, when they melted her they used a fire extinguisher with H20 written on it … I could go on .., honestly I don’t know what I watched! The songs were great and I have to say Jason manford as the cowardly lion saved the show! He was exactly like the guy in the film and was brilliant! The crowd lifted when he came on and wow can he sing! He literally carried the show! People around us were disappointed and saying the same ..,- it could have been amazing (they do such clever things on stage nowadays) but this was poor bordering on embarrassing! We paid for a West End experience and got a school production crossed with a panto 😳

SINCE WHEN WAS DOROTHY A 40 YEAR OLD WOMAN?

A very disappointing show. Dorothy is supposed to be an 11 year old girl, not a 40 year old woman. The wicked witch and the scarecrow were the best performers. Unfortunately the rest of the cast had very little stage performance whatsoever. There was good vocals but acting skills, choreography and setting was pretty poor to be honest for £450! More panto than west end show. The highlight for us were the musicians and in particular the conductor who not only conducted but also played the keyboard with passion and outstanding energy throughout the show. He was phenomenal.

A LAZY PRODUCTION

OK - I was looking forward to this show but was bitterly disappointed. First, there are too many projected backdrops - none of which you can see if you’re unlucky enough (like me) to be in the cheap seats. Note to designers: just because we’re poor doesn’t mean we don’t want to see the action! This also included being unable to see the “wizard” or indeed the rainbow (if there was one!) Next: no flying. Witches on motorbikes?? Winged monkeys that don’t take-off? I don’t think so…. Finally “little touches”: since when did a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher constitute “water”? Why did we not get “transformed” when Dorothy went over the (unseen) rainbow?? Or, for that matter, when she went back again? Why was the evil witch actually pretty?? On the plus side: the singing, actors & puppetry (Toto) was excellent & can’t be faulted. The yellow-brick road scenes were the best. A great cast in a poorly designed show. Poor people: save your money & watch the film.

COULDN’T SEE MOST OF THE SHOW

Thought the singing was good and could follow the story by listening to the characters, but the view from my seat was appalling. I couldn’t see the back of the set at all from the wide angle I had four rows back in the stalls. Most of the show was played in the huge section of the stage that was not visible to me. Extremely disappointed. Stayed only for my daughter who was three seats inside mine and could see more than I could from her angle but by no means the full stage. There was no indication of restricted viewing on ordering the tickets so was not expecting this at all.

DON’T BOTHER

The Wizard of Oz is titled as a pantomime but there is absolutely NO interaction with the audience. Dorothy is, to be fair, a good singer but far too old for the role. The dog (Toto) wasn’t even a dog, it was a good puppet but the puppeteer was distracting and ran around with the puppet the whole show. It was far too cinematic for a musical/show and lots of things were happening at the same time. The cheap seats for three still cost us £165 and we have seen far better shows for cheaper!! Jason Manford (the lion) was very good. In the interval the three of us were considering whether to leave or not. There are far better shows in London to see and we wish we had read these reviews before paying the large price! Don’t bother if you are thinking of going!

NOT LIKE THE MOVIE- AT ALL!

Just came back from the show and what a disappointment. The first shock if Dorothy. What were they thinking?! The actor is completely wrong for the role, she did not even tie her hair in two ponies like Dorothy. My daughter was so disappointed! Loved the lion but the rest can be given a miss. Thank God, we got cheap tickets but I would rather spend that money on watching movie instead!!

VERY DISAPPOINTED

I love this show and my am dram group have performed it several times I was really looking forward to seeing it on a West End stage with big names cast. Expected it to be updated but this was bizarre- so far from the original, songs I’d never heard of, poorly sung and far too sci fi for me! View wasn’t good either - row R to the side Far better shows out there! Very disappointed

2.0 star rating Sharona from Surrey

DISAPPOINTED

This production of a well loved classic was completely disappointing. Cheap set, costumes and totally distorted from the classic. The acting was weak not portraying the original characters, lacked luster. Dorothy had a good voice but not right for this role, far to old. If your expecting it to be like your memories of the film, then don't waste your money. And don't sit in the Grand Circle very poor view, thank goodness I didn't pay for the stalls!

2.0 star rating Kay from Essex

DISAPPOINTING

Having read these reviews, I wish I had read them first, rather than after the show. I fully agree it was amateurish, no feel good, no joy, no wonderful, overwhelming, uplifting , joyful parts. I was expecting a wonderful yellow brick road, but yellow arrows, pulled by people dressed in yellow seemed rather dull. Even the veneration backdrop wasn’t yellow brick! I feel the man who controlled the dog, by moving around the stage on all fours must have ended up with a bad back. I’m sure in this technological age, a better interpretation of Toto would have been more pleasant to watch. Dorothy showed little affection for Toto anyway. I would not recommend.

LACKING THEATRICAL PROWESS

Theatre is a passion of mine-entering the delight of a theatre, hearing the instruments warm up, being guided by a voice seemingly from the heavens guiding us to take your seat...music leads to a curtain rise and a set that 'along with the music' sets the scene...we are drawn in as the actors take us on a journey, spell bound are we as they tell a story - costumes as delight, changing hand built scenes a delight, costumes thrill, song audible. Not in this production-it was wholly lacking in theatrical prowess. The smoke coming from the stage smelt like awful and affected my throat and the audio so loud it was impossible to hear the words of the songs and made the sound a jumbled mess. Those with hearing aids would struggle. I felt for the poor person pupetting the dog - bent over for the whole show - not good for the persons back. I did not enjoy the cross between pantomime and movie style presentation. Sadly, for me, this ruined what is a classic for real theatre. Not impressed.

Family night that resulted in us leaving at half time. Pretty disappointed. The original characters and stories were twisted to fit some modern take, that was more like a high school musical. Glinda on a Barbie pink moped, the powerful Oz, a robot with two binoculars. Poppies, four dancers in red wearing lampshades. Just random and ruined it for us. The emerald city was a projected NYC with ozmcdonald signs. The magic was gone and the old fashioned tale, warped into something unrecognisable. The only person carrying the show was The Vivienne as the Witch of the West.

2.0 star rating Ally from Edinburgh, Scotland

CRUISE SHIP LIKE PRODUCTION

Unfortunately the show hasn’t lived up to the hype. The show opens with a bang and is very captivating however the following scenes are slow, boring and difficult to follow. Throughout the show the set changes are minimal and such makes it difficult to follow where each partition is set. Various amounts of pyro and dramatic lighting effects do add to the drama and atmospheric effect of the show however overall, the production level is set to the standard of a cruise ship. The fake prosc side drapes limit audience view and make the show feels very boxed in, almost like watching it on a screen rather than being immersed in the magic. Sound was terrible to begin with. Harsh 4-8K throughout the Pa however this was dialed back as the show went on. Elephaba’s mic was hissing and feeding back all over the shop throughout the performance. Very disappointed and hoped to see a much better production level from a professional touring company.

VERY DISAPPOINTINGLY

What an absolute let down. Very basic staging. The Cowardly Lion looked like he didn’t want to be there. Very lack lustre performance. Toto was the best part. Almost felt like not staying for second half. Just felt like a very cheap amateur production and a poor one at that. Definitely didn’t take me over the rainbow

LET DOWN.

We had a weekend away to see this unfortunately it was very disappointing. Started so slowly that we were losing interest. The main characters are good but overall it was not up to much when compared with other musicals.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

I wonder who these people are, who have to meddle with and 'reimagine ' all-time classics, and insert things which were never there in the first place. Whoever you are, please go home and 'reimagine ' your own iconic film masterpieces, if indeed you have any, and leave ours alone. A waste of an afternoon, I almost left in the interval. But the Ruby slippers were beautiful, and the cowardly lion was excellent, just like the one in the film. I'll check very carefully before booking any future events at the Hippodrome. I also had to move seats because of noise disturbance from the row in front. This is one of my favourite films, and you ruined it. You know what they say, "go woke, go broke."

WIZARD OF OZ

Story lost in a gimmicky over loud performance. So much talent wasted. It was more rocky horror show meets panto. There for opening night a few around us did not return for the second half of the performance.

CHEAP & ANNOYING

I walked out after half an hour, it is terrible. This seems to have been upscaled from a secondary school production judging by the 'set' (mainly a back projection) and synthesiser music. Very loud, shouty and awful. The classic songs are mangled, don't expect anything uplifting. Even the Munchkins are weird, including full size old bald men wearing party hats. So strange.

1.0 star rating Jan from East Sussex England

LACK LUSTRE LET DOWN

Oh my what a let down, Si-Fi meets panto. Where in the story did Dorothy ever go to the poppy hotel with the cast standing around with red lampshades on their heads. Come on we pay enough for the tickets give us a show with a decent set and props and a producer who doesn't want to change a classic in to a chaotic senseless mess

WORST SHOW EVER

How could you get this so wrong! Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it did! Very much an amateur production then a West End show. Dorothy was played with no character or passion. The production was 1950's steampunk mixed in with the TV show the Jets! When Glenda the witch came on stage in a scooter I noped out of there! It was like the local high school had put on a production and the drama teacher got a bit too creative! I could go on and go about awful this show was. Please don't waste your money!

WIZARD OF OZ

I was really looking forward to watching one of my all time favourites but was sadly very disappointed from the start as it was nothing like what I expected, I was that disappointed I very nearly didn’t come back in to watch the rest after half time but thought we’ll the tickets cost me enough so continued but as I expected it didn’t get any better, the only actor that deserved a round of applause was The Lion who was played by Jason Manford. I wish I had read these reviews first and I certainly wouldn’t have wasted my time and money to come and watch it.

DREADFUL

Four of us went to see this on Saturday and all of us decided to leVe at the interval including our 9 year old. Too loud, too cinematic, Ashley Banjo can dance but can't sing and Dorothy was completely miscast. She looks too old for the role and doesnt have any wistfulness in her voice when singing Over The Rainbow. She is undoubtedly talented but this is the wrong role for her. One of the worst shows I've seen in a long time and I go to the London theatre regularly. Save your money and go and see Crazy for you instead whoch was fabulous.

THE WIZARD OF OZ IN LONDON PALLADIUM

Very very disappointed in the show. No special effects very basic . I seen the Andrew Lloyd webber one 10 years ago which was amazing so don't go back to see this one as not even on the same level. Overall extremely disappointed

OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD? DON’T BOTHER

Where to start. Appaling sound design, Manford (poorly) mimicking Lahr with zero originality, bringing nothing to the role, Banjo’s tone deaf ‘singing’. And then there’s the worst audience behaviour ever experienced- and it’s not the kids who are the problem here. We escaped barely intact at the interval. Theatre in autopilot. Grim ⭐️

VERY DISAPPOINTED

We came to see this show back in 2012 and was excited that Andrew Lloyd Webber had brought it back again. We looked forward to seeing this for so long and even though we had read some poor reviews we gave it the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately Andrew Lloyd Webber trying to reinvent classic musicals and shows just does not work. Was disappointed from start to finish and only stayed in the hope it would improve. Will not be rebooking and will not recommend to anyone

WORST SHOW EVER!

We saw The Wizard of Oz a few years ago at the London Palladium and it was an amazing show, hence the reason we decided to go again. What a huge mistake!! It is the WORST show ever. Dorothy had an expressionless face the whole time ,as if she was just trying to get through her shift then go home! Glinda the Good Witch does NOT come out on a Barbie moped! Having a puppet dog was ridiculous! Ashley Banjo could not act or sing, I felt embarrassed for him trying to hit the notes, and what was that ridiculous idea for the yellow brick road - neon signs with ushers/usherettes eating popcorn on them? Do not go to this show. You are wasting your money. We came out at the interval and didn't go back in. We would have come out sooner if it didn't mean disturbing the people around us!!

1.0 star rating Shannon from Edinburgh,

I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS WATCHING!

I do not even know where to start, the only thing that was enjoyable in this was The Lion, The Scarecrow and The Choreography! We left at the interval. It was a complete waste of money, whoever chose the cast members obviously did not care. The set was cheap, it's what you would expect at a budget pantomime Not Edinburgh Playhouse. Huge disappointment. I couldn't stop laughing but in disbelief at Toto! A Puppet and a puppeteer! I really did feel sorry for that poor person's back. I seen Wicked the month before and it was fantastic!!! The Munchkins in Wicked should have been cast in The Wizard Of Oz! Do not waste your money because you will be disappointed.

DON’T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY

I was so looking forward to this show and so disappointed 😞 I’m 58 years old and watched this film with my mother since I was 5 years old. Production team trying to make it a modern film with scenes of America as back drops. Why not the emerald city, yellow brick road? Characters not true to life. We didn’t go back for the second half but went to bar for a drink only to be told to speak a bit quieter as a mum and young son were watching the show on a tv screen!! Really!!?? So can’t have a normal conversation in a public bar!!?? (Playhouse Edinburgh) open another area for people that want quiet to watch the show on a tv screen!! So disappointing.

WOULD RATHER WATCH RIVER CITY BOX SET

We went tonight 17/02/24. We had to leave at half time. How we lasted that long I will never know. Worse stage show we have ever seen. Terrible acting. Very awkward performances. It was like watching your drunk uncle hitting on the bridesmaid. Don't ever pay to see this. You have been warmed.

BEST THING WAS OUR SEATS

Didn't enjoy it at all. Everything looked rushed, the puppeteer was running all over the stage, Dorothy had a lovely voice, and when the Munchkins came on the stage that finished it for me. It is my granddaughters favourite film when she was little and she just said to me this is rubbish, we left in the interval.
